Importance of Vastu in Health
The Vedas are said to be apourusheya. This means they cannot be dated. However we can safely give them a time period of at least 5000 years. Vastu comes from the Vedas and is attributed to the Atharvaveda. Vastu is also referred to as Sthapathya Veda. Vastu, Jyotisha, Vedanta, Yoga and Ayurveda are inter-related and inter-dependant.
When we talk of vastu and health, we need to relate vastu with ayurveda. By blending the two subjects we will be in a position to understand the different diseases and health problems and how by certain Vastu corrections we could treat the diseases or ailments better for giving faster relief to the patients.
Vastu Shashtra is the science of dwellings.
Ayurveda is the science of life. Both relate to Brahmanda (the macrocosm) and the Pindanda (the microcosm). While Vastu speaks of the cosmic universe and energies and their relation to the structure and surroundings man lives in Ayurveda speaks of the cosmic universe and its relation to the universe within man. Vastu aims at giving man contentment in terms of health, wealth and happiness and Ayurveda aims at providing man with health, refined growth and reasonable happiness.
Ayurveda considers "Pancha Mahabhootas" The five primary elements of nature are alloted certain placements by the classical vastu texts.
Udaka or water is given the northeast - Cosmic Energy.
Agni or fire is given the southeast.
Vayu or air is given the northwest.
Akasha or ether is given the southwest - Telluric Energy.
Prithvi or earth is given the Brahmasthana or the central place - Global Energy.
Ayurveda tells us that when there is an imbalance of these primary elements, it creates a malady. Ayurveda tells us that the constitution of a person decides the disease he or she is prone to:
The Air principle: created from ether and air. A Vata person can be prone to chronic constipation,back pain (normally lower back), paralysis, arthritis, etc.
The fire principle: Created from fire. A Pitta individual can be prone to rashes, itches and be susceptible to liver disorders.
The Water Principle: Created from water and earth. A Kapha individual can be prone to congestion of lungs, obesity, bronchitis, sinusitis and cold related ailments.
These three basic problems also called tridoshas, three bio-energies or biological humors, build and nurture the body and carry out the biological functions of an individual. The augmentation or decline of one or more of these doshas upsets the biological functions and disease sets in.
The corrective measures are according to the character (trigunas) of the person associated with the internal energy system, these are termed and disposition in the particular character leads to:
1. Essence / Intelligence- is healthy with a balanced mind. Associated direction - NE
2. Energy / Action - are aggressive, assertive and generally outgoing. Associated direction - SE
3. Inertia / Inactivity- ARe inactive, egoistic or self seeking. Associated direction - NW
The ailments which are common in most households are - Common cold & cough, Diabetes, Inferiority complex, High blood pressure & Sound sleep.
