What Is Building Biology ? This is Vastu Shilpa Shastra

Building Biology is the holistic study of the man-made environment, human health and ecology

It could also be classified to introduction to home-making to those seeking to build a house that responds to their needs of balance and connection. It explores the forgotten potential of our spaces to be aware of the intangible harmonies and disharmonies in the human body and how these are a result of the external environment.

In our search for healthier, happier and more wholesome lives, we often forget to look at the thing that provides us comfort most intimately, our space.

Growing technology, urbanisation and consumerism has allowed us to lose touch with the connection to our bodies and the earth. The weakening of this innate sensitivity to our internal environment and how it responds to the external has had an impact on the way we design our living spaces.

Modern architecture continues in ignorance of the human body as a mass of intangible forces in constant conversation with the energy of its surroundings. The price of this ignorance has been the creation of buildings and homes that continue to alienate us from that which will provide us lasting well-being.

Building Biology or Vastu Shilpa Shastra offers a system for the creation of health enhancing and ecologically sustainable (regenerative) built environments. It views the natural world, with all of its complexities and subtleties for a healthy human environment. It studies a number of physical phenomena currently beyond the scope of Building Science, like morphic energies , esoteric and quantum resonance in order to better understand the health enhancing benefits of nature and to ensure that our built environments are inclusive of these benefits.

While Building Science is primarily focused on the “health” of structures, Building Biology is focused on the relationship between the building and the health of its occupant.

Special factors that concern the Building BiologistsExternal Harming influences on our Body and Health

Organisms are accustomed to several natural earth radiations and influences, coming from inside the earth, from atmosphere, ionosphere and also from sun and space. Most of them are essentially necessary for life on earth. These are:

  • Earth magnetic Field
  • Geomagnetic frequencies
  • Schumann frequencies
  • Sferics (Electromagnetic pulses caused by atmospheric phenomena, such as lightning)
  • Solar frequencies, colours, light, warmth and radiation Cosmic radiation

Most Hazardous Building Biology Defects

Toxic Building Material

Many building materials like Asbestos , VOC’s ,Lead , Formaldehyde etc ,can contain chemicals of concern that can lead to short-term and long-term health impacts.

Short-term impacts can include skin allergy, eye irritation, throat irritation and sneezing, while long-term impacts can include asthma, cancer, infertility, among many others.” Sick Building syndrome is associated with long term exposure to poor and toxic indoor quality of air .

Faulty Design

Substandard housing such as water leaks, poor ventilation, dirty carpets and pest infestation can lead to an increase in mold, mites and other allergens associated with poor health.

Health effects range from odour annoyance to symptoms in nose, eyes and skin to severe allergies and asthma symptoms or onset of wheezing and other problems in the respiratory tracts.

Geopathic Stress.

Geopathic stress is caused by distortion or disruption of the electromagnetic field of the earth. The earth resonates at an approximate electromagnetic frequency of 7.83 Hz. This frequency is known as the Schumann Resonance after the physicist who discovered it in 1952.

Living in areas that are not beneficial to our health results in stress on our whole system – body, mind and spirit – and is called Geopathic Stress (GS).

This earth frequency can be disrupted by various naturally occurring geological features such as fault lines, underground waterways, caverns or ore deposits. Geopathic stress can also be caused by various man-made installations such as water mains, other buried utilities and other disruptions on and below the earth’s surface.

Electro Magnetic Radiations

Electromagnetic radiation, in classical physics, the flow of energy at the universal speed of light through free space or through a material medium in the form of the electric and magnetic fields that make up electromagnetic waves such as radio waves, visible light, and gamma rays. In such a wave, time-varying electric and magnetic fields are mutually linked with each other at right angles and perpendicular to the direction of motion.

An electromagnetic wave is characterized by its intensity and the frequency ν of the time variation of the electric and magnetic fields.
